NABA’s Butterflies I’ve Seen Quickstart

We suggest that you print a hard copy version these instructions to use as you work through the site,

STEP 1:  Find and click on the “Login” button in the top middle.  This is just below the “Butterflies I’ve Seen” header.

STEP 2:  At the “Login” page, follow NABA’s instructions to create a personal user account.

After creating an account, your will be returned to the home page and a message in green will read:

“Your login was SUCCESSFUL. You can now use the menu to navigate the site.“

NOTE: If you will be using a location that you are sure is not in the system (i.e. your backyard) please go to STEP 5 immediately and add the location, then continue with STEP 3.

STEP 3:  To enter sightings, click on “Field Trips” at upper right.  A new screen will appear with a list of the field trips you have entered.  If this is your first use of the system, there will be no field trips to view.  Click on the “Add Trip” button, located just below “Discussions”

STEP 4:  A new screen will appear enabling you to choose the selection where you observed butterflies on your field trip.  Choice 1 is to use a favorite location, but as a new user, you will not have a favorite location.  Choice 2 is to use the Location Wizard.  It is set using USA as the default country.  If you field trip was within the United States, click on “Continue with this Country.” If your field trip was in Canada or Mexico, choose the appropriate country from the drop down list.

A new screen will appear “Search Location From States/Provinces in USA”  First, select the state (or, in Canada, the province) from the drop down list.

Under place name, type in a portion of the name of the location where you observed the butterflies.  For example, if you saw butterflies in Robert Louis Stevenson State Park in Napa County, California, you could type in as the name of your location “Robert Louis.”  You do not need to type in the entire name, but the portion that you use needs to be spelled correctly.

You do NOT need to enter the County, or Location Type, but these may help you narrow the results of the search

If you want to use your house as your location, you can enter the name of the town in which you live as the "Place Name."

After you finish entering the information to search for, click on "Continue."

A location that matches your search will now be shown.  Other matches can be found in the drop down list associated with the box.  If the location shown is the one you want, click on “Use this Location.” and go to STEP 5.  If you cannot find your location, you will need to add it (please go to STEP 4A).

STEP 4A: Add a New Location

To do this click on the button “Add a New Location” near the bottom of the form.  A screen will appear asking for all of the data about your location (required data will hace red labels).    If possible please try to include latitude and longitude data, as NABA will be attempting to map and perform other calculations based on this.  Once you have entered your data click on the “Save this Location” button.  You will be returned to screen at the beginning of STEP 4 but your new location will now be in Your Favorites pull down list (next to the label “1.  From Favorite Locations”).  Please select your new location and click on the button “Use This Location”.

STEP 5:  A new screen will appear that says “Add a Field Trip”  You will be asked to select the date of the field trip, with today’s date as the default date.  You can also enter notes about the field trip in the box provided.  Once you have selected the date, or if the default date is the correct date for your trip, then click on “Save Field Trip.”

A new screen will appear that says “Field Trip Butterfly Sightings.” Scroll down the page and you will see a list of all the butterflies species that have been recorded from the state in which you took your field trip.  For each species of butterfly, enter the number seen, or use the abundance codes provided on the page.  When you finished entering all of your sightings, click “Save.”
